Can I forget the hell I’m saved from?

Hell, however, should not come off our radar, even if we no longer have to fear it. First, we are called to constant thanks and thanks for the fact that we will never experience hell. We’re called to remember that, on the cross. Christ came to hell for us and received all the wrath and fury of the Father that they owed us for our sins; but secondly, hell has not disappeared. Why do we care what we’re going to eat or dress, when there are people who will end up in hell, unless they repent, but who only care what they’ll eat or dress? It’s bad enough that those who want to deny the existence of hell are worried about absurdity. At what point is it worse than us, who affirm the reality of hell, worry about nonsense?

When we first seek the kingdom of God and its righteousness, we do not seek simply to walk through the gates before they close; it is not simply our entry that we seek as we seek the kingdom, but that we are involved in the project to see the glory of Christ’s reign in all things known in the world, which means that we seek the kingdom by seeking to be used by the King to gather the chosen ones from all over the world. We seek the kingdom by proclaiming the good news for a lost and dying world. We seek the kingdom when the Spirit uses us to remove marks not only from fire, but from fire that never goes out.

  • None of us are sufficiently aware of hell.
  • If we were.
  • We would be marked by both gratitude and urgency: gratitude for our own rescue.
  • Urgent work to save others.
  • Hell is real and hell is eternal.
