August 8th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: Weave cobwebs. (Isaiah 59. 5)

Contemplate a cobweb and contemplate there the most suggestive figure of the hypocritical religious. The web is made for the purpose of catching prey – the spider grows by eating flies. Foolish people are easily fooled by the sharp confession of scammers, and even the most insightful cannot always escape. Philip baptized Simon the magician, whose malicious declaration of faith was soon rebuked by Peter’s severe rebuke. Custom, reputation, praise, progress, and other little flies are the little game that hypocrites catch in their nets. The cobweb is a marvel of skill. Look at the web and admire the predator’s ingenious devices. Is not the religion of the deceiver also admirable? How does the deceiver make a blatant lie appear real? How do you get your jewelry to match the purpose of gold so well? The web comes out of the spider’s intestines. The bee extracts its wax from the flowers. The spider does not suck the flowers, but stretches its web to some extent. Likewise, hypocrites find their comfort and hope in themselves; its anchor is forged on its own anvil and its handle is twisted with its own hands. They lay their own foundations and build the pillars of their own homes, refusing to be in debt to the sovereign grace of God. However, a spider web is quite fragile. It is done in a curious way, with care, but not lasting. You cannot measure forces with the cleaning broom. The hypocrite does not need a high-voltage battery to shatter his hopes; a simple gust of wind will do it. The cobwebs of the hypocrites will soon crumble when the Broom of Destruction begins its cleanup job. This brings us to another consideration: these canvases will not be tolerated in the house of the Lord. He will see that they and those who wove them will be destroyed forever. Oh my soul, rest on something better than a cobweb. Let the Lord Jesus be your eternal refuge.
