August 23rd? God is an idolather

God is not an idylather

Verse of the Day: When he comes to be glorified in his saints and admired by all who believed that day (for our testimony was believed among you). (2 Thessalonians 1. 10)

  • People come across the teaching that God exalts his own glory and seeks to be praised by his people.
  • Because the Bible teaches us not to be so.
  • For example.
  • Does the Bible say that love does not seek your interests? (1 Corinthians 13: 5).

How can God be loving by being totally dedicated to the pursuit of your glory, praise, and joy?How can God be for us if he is so completely alone?

The answer I propose is this: because God is unique as being glorious and completely self-sufficient, it must be for himself, to make it for us. The rules of humility that concern a creature cannot be applied in the same way to its Creator.

If God departed from himself as a source of infinite joy, He would cease to be God and deny the infinite value of His own glory. This would indicate that there is something more valuable outside of you: it would commit idolatry.

It wouldn’t do us any good, because where would we go if our God were unjust?Where would we find a rock of integrity in the universe if God’s heart did not value what is extremely precious?Where would we go with our worship if God Himself abandoned the pretensions of infinite beauty and courage?

No, we must never seek to turn God’s exaltation into love, demanding that God cease to be God.

Instead, we must realize that God is love precisely because He tirelessly seeks the praises of his name in the hearts of his people.
