Verse of the day: Beloved, do not a venge, but yield to anger; because it says: revenge belongs to me; I will pay, said the Lord (Romans 12:19).
Why is this such a crucial promise to overcome our inclination to bitterness and vengeance?Why does this promise meet one of the most powerful impulses behind anger?An impulse that is not entirely false.
- I can illustrate this with an experience I had during my seminary days: I was in a small group of couples who started having very deep personal relationships.
- One night we were discussing forgiveness and anger.
- One of the young women said she couldn’t.
- And he wouldn’t forgive his mother for what he had done to her when she was a daughter.
We talked about some of the biblical commandments and warnings against a ruthless spirit.
However, it has not moved. I warned her that her own soul was in danger if she continued with this uncompromising attitude of bitterness, but she was convinced that she would not forgive her mother.
The grace of God’s judgment is promised here in Romans 12 as a way to help us overcome a spirit of vengeance and bitterness.
Paul’s argument is that we should not take revenge, because vengeance belongs to the Lord. And to motivate us to give up our vengeful desires, does it make us a promise?That we now know it’s a promise of future grace?”The Lord said.
The promise that frees us from a ruthless, bitter, and vengeful spirit is the promise that God will settle our scores; it will do it with more justice and rigor than we would. Therefore, we can step back and make room for God to work.
