Our place is not here. We are pilgrims in this world, but before we reach our final destination, we still have a long way to go. Read more with R. C. Sproul Jr:
The Bible tells us that Abraham was looking for a city whose architect and builder is God (He 11:10). Jesus promised us that He would prepare a house for us (John 14:3). And when the story ends, a great city, the new Jerusalem, will descend from above (Apoc. 21. 2). Is it surprising that we, as pilgrims before us, see our journey as a metaphor, a journey to the heavenly city? And isn’t it fair, a small step before concluding that our call to seek the kingdom of God first is a call?to bring us there?
- There’s nothing wrong with this kind of spatial metaphor.
- You don’t complain when the Holy Ghost uses a style figure; however.
- There is an associated danger.
- In fact.
- We’re on a trip.
- But we’re going more to one person than to a place.
- To seek the kingdom first is to do less or build the kingdom than to seek the king.
- We will arrive.
- Not when we cross the city line.
- But when we are wrapped in the arms of our Savior.
The glory of the gospel also has less to do with the glory of how we have peace with God than with the glory of peace with God. Good news is not only the forgiveness of sins, but our adoption as children. Our religion is not a relationship, but a union of the relationship. We are brought, by the grace of God and without becoming God ourselves, to the same family of God.
