One of the most moving scenes of all the Gospels is the night when the Lord of heaven and earth put his face on the ground in an agonizing prayer, sweating blood. Matthew 26 reports:
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to his disciples: Sit here, while I go over there to pray. And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sad and greatly distressed. Then he said to them: My soul is full of pain until death; Stay here and watch with me. And going a little further, he fell on his face, praying and saying: My Father, if possible, pass this cup from me; however, not as I want, but as you want. And returning to his disciples, he found them asleep; and said to Peter, “So you couldn’t watch for an hour?” Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation; in fact, the spirit is ready, but the flesh is weak. And when he went the second time, he prayed, saying: My Father, if this cup cannot pass from me without my drinking it, your will be done. And when he returned he found them asleep; because your eyes were heavy. And leaving them again, he went to pray for the third time, saying the same words. Then he approached his disciples and said, “Now sleep and rest; behold, the hour has come, and the Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of sinners. Get up, come on; behold, what betrayed me has come.
- Three times the Son of God asks the Father to remove the cup from God’s wrath.
- Three times the sky was silent.
- But in the silence of the cold night.
- Unmistakable?It can be heard.
- No.
- It was not possible to remove the chalice and complete the mission.
- There was no other way.
But why, why was there no other possible path for an omnipotent God?Why did Jesus have to drink the glass?
Five answers are presented
For he did not really take the angels, but took abraham’s posterity; that is why he must be like his brethren in everything, to be a merciful and faithful high priest in what is of God, to atone for the sins of God. for in what he himself, being tempted, suffered, he can help those who are tempted (Hebrews 2:16-18).
Because we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses; but he who, like us, was tempted in everything, but without sin (Hebrews 4:15).
For the inclination of the flesh is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be (Romans 8. 7).
For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, Jesus Christ man (1 Timothy 2. 5).
And in no other is there salvation, for there is no other name under heaven, given to men, in which we can be saved (Acts 4. 12).
That is why he must be like his brethren in everything, to be a merciful and faithful high priest in what is of God, to atone for the sins of the people (Hebrews 2:17).
It is love, not that we love God, but That He loved us and sent His Son as a propitiation for our sins (1 John 4. 10).
To which God proposed propitiation by faith in his blood, to demonstrate his righteousness by the remission of sins committed before, under the patience of God; For the demonstration of his righteousness in this present time, that he may be just and justify those who have faith in Jesus (Romans 3:25-26).
Then, when he was released, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him; If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will soon glorify him (John 13:31). -32)
Jesus spoke thus, and, looking up at heaven, said, Father, the time has come; Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you; I have glorified you on earth, having done the work you have entrusted to me; and now, Father, glor make fun of yourself, with that glory I had with you before the world existed (John 17:1-5).
You shouldn’t think that no answer was given during Gethsemane’s incredible night, shouldn’t we even think that he?No? The Silence of the Father indicated unnecessary negligence, as if God the Father were a divine and unnatural Father. Should it be understood that the only Perfect Father has found the opportunity to reject the perfect Son’s request because such a refusal has reached a perfect end: a perfectly qualified High Priest, reconciliation by the one God-man Mediator, the loving atonement for the sins of men, the justification of the father’s righteousness, and the ever-reciprocal glory of the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father. The silent response to Gethsemane will be heard forever in the joyful cries of praise of the universe!
Why did the Father answer? We have someone we approach by grace, why did the Father respond?Don’t we have one who stands between us in all our wickedness and God in all his holiness to reconcile and unite as friends, not rebels. Why did the Father respond? His anger was fully satisfied in the Atonement of the Son. Why did the Father say “No,” we are sure that our acceptance of God occurred on a perfectly legitimate basis? No tricks, no gaps in the laws, no legal fiction, no injustice that threatens or questions the exchange of our sin for the righteousness of Jesus. Why did the Father say “No,” will we eternally enjoy and share the glory of the Father and the Son in the eternal and perpetual age to come?
I’m glad my father said no.
