3 Principles for Pentatheal Preaching

Continuing with my previous “4 Reasons We Should Preach the Pentateal,” let me give you some advice on how preachers can do this.

1. Explicitly preach

  • First.
  • We must preach explicitly.
  • That is.
  • Through all the books of the Pentateuch.
  • Chapter by chapter.
  • Verse by verse.
  • Do many preachers understand them? Cherries? of the text.
  • Leaving the spiritual regime of his congregations to the whim of his feelings week after week.
  • Although he was not an explanatory preacher in the sense that I am advocating.
  • Charles Haddon Spurgeon described what we should do: just open our Bibles and let the Holy Spirit do His work in the same way as if we let a lion run free and let him do the work.
  • Your wish.
  • Our people need to hear the stories of Genesis.
  • Such as creation.
  • The sin of Adam.
  • Noah.
  • And the Flood.
  • Abram’s call.
  • Jacob’s struggle.
  • And Joseph’s preservation of Israel as well.
  • Like the genealogy of Esau that seems incapable of being preached (Genesis 36) and the sexual deviations of the history of Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38).
  • Our people need to hear the stories of the Exodus.
  • Such as the preservation of Moses on the Nile.
  • His calling at the burning bush.
  • The plagues.
  • The Ten Commandments and the Tabernacle.
  • As well as the seemingly random laws in the self.
  • – saying? Book of the Covenant? (Exodus 21-23).
  • These are just the tip of the iceberg.

2. Preach clearly

Second, we must preach “clearly. ” The language of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 2: 1-5 [1] and Colossians 4: 4 [2] became the war cry of the Puritan “simple style” of preaching in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, emphasizing simplicity of expression and In short, each sermon revolved around two main points: doctrine and use, or, in our terminology, exhibition and application.

Preaching clearly the Pentatheal is first to preach the doctrine; Pentateuch texts are the fertile ground on which prophets and apostles have harvested their doctrine, so when you preach in Genesis 1, preach about the doctrine of creation, when you preach in Genesis 2, preach on Saturday, when you preach about the narrative of the flood in Genesis 6-9, preach about divine justice and mercy , when he preaches about Abram’s call in Genesis 12, preach about choice and the real call when he preaches Abraham’s faith in Genesis 15, preaches Sola Fide’s justification. The examples of doctrines in pentatheal texts are too numerous to mention.

Preaching the Pentateal clearly means preaching the application and use of text. We have to tell our people what? The passage, as well as the?So what? Westminster’s repertoire for God’s public worship called him “bringing home for special use, applying it to his listeners. “This is an area where retired preachers can be weak, to be honest. The Westminster directory admits that the app “will turn out to be a very difficult job for [the pastor], which requires a lot of caution, zeal and meditation. “To preach, a minister must have respect for those he preaches to. It takes time to develop this skill, because it takes time to get to know each other, their sheep and their needs, worries, problems and fears.

Why is it so important for people to understand God’s holiness and righteousness in the account of the plagues of exodus? What do you want your people to do in response to God’s providence in Joseph’s account? He cannot simply feed his ignorant, helpless and often fearful flock. with the flesh of the Word, you have to tell them why it’s good for them, why they need to eat and how they need to eat.

3. Preach Christologically

At the end of The Art of Prophecy, William Perkins declared “The Juice of Sumo. “To preach with these words: “Preach a Christ for Christ for the praise of Christ”. We must proclaim Christ as the eternal wisdom of the Father, for whom the universe was made from Genesis 1, proclaim him as the Savior of judgment in the account of the flood, proclaim him as a judge of the living and dead in narratives of the wounds of exodus, and proclaim his active and passive obedience. in the laws and regulations of the Book of the Covenant and in the accounts of the tabernacle.

In saying this, let me add that not only should you preach about Christ, but it must be the voice of Christ to your congregation. You want people to hear the living voice of Christ near them in your voice and not just as a distant echo. I do this by preaching with passion and urgency, and speaking in the first person often. It’s humiliating and terrifying. But if Paul says, How will they believe in the one they have not heard of?(Romans 10:14), and if preaching is not the word of men, but the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13 [3]), then his voice is the living voice, the living voice of the Lord. Therefore, preach Christ to the unbelievers, calling them to repentance and faith; preach christ to dubious believers, assuring them of the love of their hearts; preach christ to strong believers, calling them to persevere and continue in a living faith; and preach christ to rebellious, lazy, and treacherous members, calling them to understand their privileges and enter them with divine sadness and true faith, not just historical ones.

The Pentatheal must be preached, for it is the Word of God; the Pentatheal must be preached, for it contains food for the soul of our hungry people; Finally, we must want to preach the Pentatheal, because he takes people by the hand for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our incredible life in it.

[1] Brethren, when I came to you to tell you the testimony of God, I did not do so with language or wisdom, because I have decided not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and this crucified one; and it was in Weakness, fear, and great tremor that my word and preaching were between you were not a persuasive language of wisdom, but a demonstration of the Spirit and power, that your faith may not be based on human wisdom, but on the power of God. . However, we put wisdom among the experienced; But not the wisdom of this century, nor that of the mighty of this century, reduced to nothing?1 Cor 2, 1-5.

[2]? For me to manifest, how do I do it? Cl 4: 4

[3] Another reason why we must constantly thank God is that, having received the word you have heard from us, that is, from God, you have not accepted it as a word of men, but as it really is. the word of God, which, in fact, acts effectively in you those who believe.

The biblical Graeme Goldsworthy provides a solid foundation for preaching the entire Bible in a coherent and Christocentric way. Although gospel-centered preaching is more common, Christian pastors and preachers still face difficulties in preaching the Old Testament. The practical book offers help.
